Yet you may ask yourself “Can I really forgive and forget?” Unforgiveness can affect your mental state. It can cause trigger depression, underperformance due to lack of concentration or lack of interest in doing things. You may find it difficult to relate to others and you become emotionally withdrawn.
Picture in your mind how a wildfire spreads. This is how lack of forgiveness affects you. A wildfire starts as a tiny spark, and before you realise it, within a couple of minutes, it grows rapidly and loses control. Even when the fire is successfully stopped, a lot of damage would have been done by then.
You may have heard about wildfires affecting places like California or Australia and the damage to many homes and structures. Many people lost their lives as a result. Lack of forgiveness will precipitate a devastating effect on your life.It will be in your own interest to forgive that person for whatever they would have done to you or to forgive yourself. One thing that people find difficult to do is to forgive themselves for wrongdoing. Guilt becomes a constant tormentor.
No matter how dreadful the situation may have been, for your own sake, I would implore you, learn to forgive and let go of the past. If you wish to forgive someone and you do not know what to do, ask the Father; pray about it and He will show you what to do. You should have the purpose in your heart to forgive. Depending upon the extent of whatever happened, forgiveness may be instantaneous or a slow process. It is mandatory to forgive; the word of God encourages us to forgive (Matthew 18v21). Forgiveness has health benefits; it can boost your immune system.
